Metabolic Syndrome in Children and Teens at Well-Rooted Pediatrics
Empowering Healthy Lifestyles for a Stronger Future

At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we are dedicated to helping your child or teen achieve optimal health by identifying and addressing potential risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a group of health conditions that can significantly increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Early intervention is crucial to prevent long-term health issues, and we focus on empowering families with the knowledge and tools to make lasting changes.

Understanding Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of five key risk factors that can lead to serious health complications if left unaddressed. These factors include:

  1. A large waistline (indicating excess abdominal fat)
  2. Low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol
  3. High triglyceride levels
  4. High blood sugar levels
  5. High blood pressure

These risk factors can be influenced by lifestyle habits such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, and excess body weight. The good news is that metabolic syndrome is reversible with proper lifestyle changes. Addressing these factors early, particularly in children and teenagers, can prevent long-term health consequences and even eliminate the need for medication.

The Importance of Family History

Genetics play a role in the risk for developing metabolic syndrome. If a close family member has been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes, your child may be at an elevated risk. At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we take a thorough family health history to assess potential risks and create a prevention plan that’s tailored to your child’s needs.

Key Indicators of Metabolic Syndrome in Children

  1. Body Shape: If your child carries weight around their abdomen, rather than their hips, it increases the likelihood of metabolic syndrome. Abdominal fat, known as visceral fat, is linked to higher risks of diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.
  2. Diet and Hydration: What your child drinks can significantly impact their health. Sugary drinks like fruit juices, sodas, and sports drinks can spike blood sugar levels, while water, unsweetened tea, and low-fat milk are better options. We work with families to create healthy eating habits, focusing on nutrient-dense foods that support overall wellness.
  3. Weight Loss: A small, sustainable weight loss of just 5% of body weight can have a major impact on your child’s health. For example, losing 8-10 pounds may improve blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and blood pressure, potentially reducing the need for medications.
  4. Exercise: Regular physical activity plays a vital role in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome. Aiming for at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise per day can improve your child’s cholesterol, blood glucose levels, and overall fitness. Strength training and intense aerobic exercises also enhance glucose sensitivity and reduce insulin resistance.
  5. Reducing Sedentary Behavior: Prolonged sitting has been linked to increased risk for metabolic syndrome. Encouraging your child to stay active throughout the day—whether through sports, walking, or breaks from screen time—can make a significant difference in their overall health.

Testing and Monitoring for Metabolic Syndrome

At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we offer comprehensive screenings to assess the risk of metabolic syndrome. Common tests include blood glucose, A1C, and fasting insulin levels. Fasting insulin levels, in particular, can help predict the development of prediabetes and metabolic syndrome, offering valuable insight into your child’s metabolic health.

A Comprehensive Approach to Prevention and Treatment

We provide a holistic, individualized approach to managing metabolic syndrome. Our team works closely with families to develop personalized nutrition and exercise plans, as well as monitor lab results to ensure your child’s health markers improve over time.

By making smart, sustainable lifestyle changes, your child can avoid the long-term risks of metabolic syndrome and lead a healthier, more vibrant life.

Our family loves Jessica and her whole practice. We feel well cared for, seen and heard! In this day and age of quick doctor visits and high costs of care, the care we receive here is integral to wellness.

Valerie and the entire team at well rooted have been an intergral part of my sons health journey. After visiting multiple Drs and not receiving a clear answer, I was at a complete loss on how to help my son. After our initial meeting with Valerie, I immediately knew we were at the right place! Not only did she take the time to listen but reassured both my son and I that we would get to the root cause of the issue. It hasn’t been a quick fix, however, after 6 months my son was feeling better and back to himself and I couldn’t be happier! Valerie didn’t just put a bandaid on the situation, but truly got to the root cause. I’m hopeful for my sons future and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of Val and the entire staff at well rooted. I feel truly blessed to have found them and highly recommend them to any parent who has been let down by the traditional health care system.

Jessica is the absolute BEST! We brought our newborn daughter to Well-Rooted days after she was born for her first appointment with Jessica and she took excellent care of her/us. Extremely informative and made us feel very comfortable with any questions we had. We are very confident in our choice with Well-Rooted and are going to continue to see Jessica as long as we live in the area. Highly recommended!

We don’t go to the Crystal Lake Well Rooted anymore since we moved going over to OakBrook. We saw Victoria was absolutely fantastic. She saw my son for the first 9 months of his life, and she not only provided phenomenal care for him, but also for myself as a newly postpartum mom. They are very respectful of your decisions as a parent at Well Rooted, and it’s nice to not feel like you’re being gaslit by medical professionals. I like how they have holistic remedies available for purchase as well. They also provided me references to lactation consultants, chiropractors, etc as well. My son is now almost 2 and thankfully very healthy. We love Well Rooted!
