Fall Fragrance: Cozy Scents Without the Hidden Health Risks

As the weather cools and the leaves turn, many of us reach for the scents of the season: pumpkin spice candles, apple cider room sprays, and cinnamon-scented plug-ins. They make our homes feel cozy — but what’s inside those fragrances may not be as comforting as the aroma suggests.

This October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s worth taking a closer look at the hidden health effects of synthetic fragrances. From hormone disruption to increased cancer risk, the chemicals in everyday scented products can impact not just women, but the health of the entire household — including children.

🎀 Why Fragrance Deserves Our Attention

The word “fragrance” may sound harmless, but it’s often a catch-all term for dozens (sometimes hundreds) of undisclosed chemicals. Manufacturers aren’t required to list each ingredient, meaning “fragrance” can mask endocrine disruptors, allergens, and even carcinogens.

Two major concerns include:

  • Phthalates → linked to hormone disruption, reproductive issues, asthma, and developmental delays in children.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives → known respiratory irritants and classified as human carcinogens.

For women, long-term exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals has been tied to hormone-driven cancers, including breast cancer. But children are especially vulnerable: their smaller bodies and developing systems mean toxins can have an outsized effect, potentially increasing risks of hormonal imbalance, allergies, learning and behavioral issues, and chronic disease later in life.

🏠 Fragrance Is Everywhere

While we expect fragrance in candles and room sprays, it’s also hidden in everyday items like:

  • Laundry detergents + fabric softeners
  • Baby lotions, wipes, and soaps
  • Personal care products (shampoos, deodorants, body sprays, perfumes)
  • Household cleaners + disinfectants
  • Air fresheners and plug-ins
  • Cosmetics and skincare

This means children are exposed from multiple angles every single day — breathing in the chemicals, absorbing them through their skin, and even ingesting them through dust particles in the home.

🌬 Indoor Air Pollution: An Overlooked Risk

According to the EPA, indoor air pollution can be 2–5 times higher than outdoor air pollution — largely due to scented household products. And since the average person spends 90% of their time indoors, this exposure isn’t minor.

Children, in particular, are more vulnerable: they breathe more air per pound of body weight, spend more time on the floor (where pollutants settle in dust), and their detox pathways are still developing. Prolonged exposure during these formative years may increase risks for:

  • Respiratory issues like asthma and allergies
  • Hormonal imbalances and early puberty
  • Immune dysregulation
  • Long-term risks of cancer and chronic disease

🌿 Safer Ways to Scent Your Home This Fall

The good news? You don’t have to give up the cozy vibes. You just need to choose healthier options:

  • Diffuse essential oils → pure oils like cinnamon, clove, orange, or cedarwood bring natural fall scents.
  • Beeswax or coconut wax candles → look for those scented only with essential oils.
  • DIY stovetop potpourri → simmer orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and apple peels in water for a safe, natural aroma.
  • Fragrance-free cleaning + laundry products → or brands that disclose ingredients and use essential oils for scent.
  • Fresh air → simply opening windows can lower indoor air pollutants.

💡 The Bottom Line

Fragrance isn’t just about mood — it’s about health. What we breathe in and put on our skin affects our hormones, immune system, and long-term risk of disease. For women, this ties directly into cancer prevention. For children, it’s about protecting their development and giving them the best foundation for lifelong health.

This fall, as you embrace cozy traditions, think beyond pink ribbons. True prevention starts with reducing everyday toxic exposures, including the synthetic fragrances hiding in our homes.

This practice is incredible! They are very friendly and welcoming. I was recommend to this practice from a relative and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve taken my son here twice so far and they have been great with him. What I also like is that it is a judgement free office. They respect my decisions regarding my son and always give me the best advice and service. They’ve answered all of my questions and concerns as well as took their time with us during our visit. Highly recommend!

We don’t go to the Crystal Lake Well Rooted anymore since we moved going over to OakBrook. We saw Victoria was absolutely fantastic. She saw my son for the first 9 months of his life, and she not only provided phenomenal care for him, but also for myself as a newly postpartum mom. They are very respectful of your decisions as a parent at Well Rooted, and it’s nice to not feel like you’re being gaslit by medical professionals. I like how they have holistic remedies available for purchase as well. They also provided me references to lactation consultants, chiropractors, etc as well. My son is now almost 2 and thankfully very healthy. We love Well Rooted!

Valerie and the entire team at well rooted have been an intergral part of my sons health journey. After visiting multiple Drs and not receiving a clear answer, I was at a complete loss on how to help my son. After our initial meeting with Valerie, I immediately knew we were at the right place! Not only did she take the time to listen but reassured both my son and I that we would get to the root cause of the issue. It hasn’t been a quick fix, however, after 6 months my son was feeling better and back to himself and I couldn’t be happier! Valerie didn’t just put a bandaid on the situation, but truly got to the root cause. I’m hopeful for my sons future and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of Val and the entire staff at well rooted. I feel truly blessed to have found them and highly recommend them to any parent who has been let down by the traditional health care system.

We have used Jessica for several years now. She takes time and care when seeing her patients. My husband and I will always feel like she saved our baby. Our youngest was sick and then ended up with RSV and pneumonia. It was Jessica who kept in touch with and made sure our daughter received the best care.
