Caring for Common Childhood Illnesses — The Natural Way

Learn natural ways to support your child through common illnesses at home. Discover when to use home remedies, when to call the doctor, and how Well-Rooted Pediatrics can guide your family toward lasting wellness.

💚 When Kids Get Sick — Trusting the Body’s Wisdom

As parents, few things are harder than watching your child feel unwell. But here’s something many families find comforting: illness isn’t always the enemy.
It’s often a sign that your child’s immune system is learning, growing, and strengthening — exactly what it’s designed to do.

At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we believe in supporting the body’s natural healing process, using gentle, effective remedies while knowing when medical care is needed.
Our goal is to empower you with the tools and knowledge to confidently care for your child at home — and to recognize when it’s time to call in your provider.

🌿 Natural Supports for Common Childhood Illnesses

Below are some of the most common conditions we see in pediatrics and simple, natural supports you can use to help your child heal comfortably.

🌡 Fever Support

A fever isn’t something to fear — it’s one of your child’s strongest natural defenses.
Focus on comfort, hydration, and rest.

At-Home Supports:

  • Offer water, broth, or electrolyte drinks frequently.
  • Keep the environment calm and cool.
  • Try chamomile tea for relaxation.
  • Gentle red light therapy (like our in-office sauna or portable Lumebox) can help reduce inflammation.

Call Your Provider If:

  • The fever lasts more than 3 days,
  • Your child is lethargic or inconsolable,
  • Or they’re under 2 months old with any fever.

😮‍💨 Cough & Congestion

Colds and coughs can make breathing difficult — but there are simple ways to help open airways naturally.

At-Home Supports:

  • Honey (for children over 1 year old) to soothe irritation.
  • Steam from a shower or humidifier to loosen mucus.
  • Saline nasal spray for gentle cleansing.
  • Diffuse eucalyptus or lavender essential oil (not directly on skin).
  • Elderberry syrup for immune support.

In-Office Options:

  • Halo Salt Therapy naturally opens and cleanses airways – offered in our Crystal Lake office!
  • Lumebox Red Light Therapy supports immune recovery.

Call Your Provider If:
Your child struggles to breathe, wheezes, or has symptoms lasting longer than 10–14 days.

👂 Ear Discomfort

Earaches are common, especially after congestion or colds.
Our approach focuses on relieving discomfort and supporting natural drainage.

At-Home Supports:

  • Warm compress over the ear.
  • Garlic oil drops (if the eardrum isn’t ruptured).
  • Chamomile tea for calm.
  • Keep the child slightly propped up to relieve pressure.

Call Your Provider If:
Pain is severe, fever is high, or symptoms don’t improve within 48 hours.

🤢 Tummy Troubles

From upset stomachs to constipation, digestion issues are a sign that the gut may need support.

At-Home Supports:

  • Chamomile or peppermint tea to soothe cramping.
  • Warm compress over the belly.
  • Probiotics to restore healthy gut bacteria.
  • Gentle clockwise belly massage.

Tip: Hydration and electrolytes are key — coconut water is a great kid-friendly option!

🤕 Headaches

Children can experience headaches from dehydration, stress, or tension.

At-Home Supports:

  • Encourage hydration and balanced meals.
  • Quiet rest in a darkened room.
  • Magnesium-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and greens.
  • Peppermint oil (diluted) on temples or neck for gentle relief.

Call Your Provider If:
Headaches are frequent, severe, or accompanied by vision or neurological changes.

🌞 Immune Support All Year Long

Prevention begins with the daily habits that support a strong immune system.

Simple Strategies:

  • Maintain optimal vitamin D levels (test before supplementing).
  • Eat probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir).
  • Limit sugar, which suppresses immune function.
  • Prioritize good sleep and outdoor play.
  • Consider seasonal Halo Salt or Red Light Therapy sessions to reduce inflammation and boost resilience.

📞 When to Call Well-Rooted Pediatrics

While many childhood illnesses resolve naturally with rest and support, it’s important to seek medical care when:

  • Fever persists beyond 3 days
  • Any fever occurs in an infant under 2 months
  • Breathing difficulties or wheezing occur
  • Ear pain or infection symptoms worsen
  • You sense something isn’t right — your parental intuition matters!

🌿 At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, We’re Here to Support You

Our providers take the time to help families understand the why behind their child’s symptoms.
From functional testing and nutritional support to natural therapies like Halo Salt Therapy and Red Light, our integrative approach focuses on healing from the root up — not just symptom management.

We want parents to feel informed, empowered, and supported every step of the way.

I drive an hour just to come to this office. Been coming since my daughter was 3, now she’s 5. It’s clean, professional, quick, friendly, reasonably priced and Jessica is a TOTAL PRO who is the main reason for our visits. Can’t recommend her and Well Rooted enough!

We don’t go to the Crystal Lake Well Rooted anymore since we moved going over to OakBrook. We saw Victoria was absolutely fantastic. She saw my son for the first 9 months of his life, and she not only provided phenomenal care for him, but also for myself as a newly postpartum mom. They are very respectful of your decisions as a parent at Well Rooted, and it’s nice to not feel like you’re being gaslit by medical professionals. I like how they have holistic remedies available for purchase as well. They also provided me references to lactation consultants, chiropractors, etc as well. My son is now almost 2 and thankfully very healthy. We love Well Rooted!

I want to send a huge THANK YOU to Victoria and the Well Rooted Practice as a whole. It began with Danielle calling me and taking detailed notes prior to our visit, which led us to being greeted by a welcoming staff and then, Victoria, the provider, who is simply amazing. She saw my son yesterday and was so knowledgeable and kind. I didn’t feel rushed at all. She took time to answer all of my questions.
Not only that, I felt wrapped in Jesus’ love hearing Christian music playing in the office.

Hand down the best practice around!

We have used Jessica for several years now. She takes time and care when seeing her patients. My husband and I will always feel like she saved our baby. Our youngest was sick and then ended up with RSV and pneumonia. It was Jessica who kept in touch with and made sure our daughter received the best care.

We love Victoria. She listens to any concerns or questions, doesn’t push any agendas, cares for our baby gently with confidence, patience, and respect. I recommend well rooted to any parents looking for a natural professional care for their babies.
