Tick bite prevention is more important than ever as warmer months bring children outdoors — and into tick territory. Well Rooted Pediatrics is hosting a free virtual event on June 10 at 1PM CST to help families stay safe this season.
Led by Colby Bray Fagan, MSN, RN, CPNP-PC, this event covers everything parents need to know about protecting their children from tick bites, recognizing warning signs, and knowing when to seek medical care.
Why Tick Bite Prevention Matters for Kids and Families
Ticks are active from spring through fall, and children are especially vulnerable because they spend more time playing in grassy, wooded areas. According to the CDC, ticks can transmit serious illnesses including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis.
Early prevention and fast action are the two most powerful tools parents have. This free event gives you both — straight from a trusted pediatric nurse practitioner.
What You Will Learn
This free tick bite prevention event covers four essential topics every parent should know heading into tick season.
How to Prevent Tick Bites This Season
We will cover practical, pediatrician-approved strategies for keeping kids safe outdoors. This includes safe repellents for children, protective clothing tips, and how to do a thorough tick check after outdoor play in wooded or grassy areas.
What to Do Immediately After a Tick Bite
If a tick does attach, the first 24 to 48 hours are critical. You will learn how to safely remove a tick at home, what NOT to do such as applying petroleum jelly or heat, and how to document the bite for your child’s provider. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends prompt removal to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Warning Signs to Watch for in Kids
Not every tick bite leads to illness — but knowing the warning signs can protect your child from serious complications. We will cover key symptoms like fever, rash especially the bull’s-eye rash linked to Lyme disease, joint pain, fatigue, and changes in behavior that should prompt a call to your pediatric provider.
When to Seek Further Medical Care
Sometimes a tick bite requires more than home observation. Our speaker will walk you through when to call your child’s doctor, what testing may be needed, and how to confidently advocate for your child’s health and wellbeing.
