Wellness Wednesday: Why is sunscreen so toxic?

Our skin is our LARGEST organ! It is very porous, especially in the heat. When we place chemicals onour skin, it absorbs into our bloodstream and in some cases and ages, reaches our blood-brain barrier.

I don’t recommend sunscreen under 6 months and I recommend little use between 6-12 months old. When we put sunscreen on our skin, we don’t absorb Vitamin D either as it blocks 95% of rays. Going outside for 15-20 minutes or until or skin is slightly pink is OKAY even though fear has been embedded in us to avoid the sun due to cancer. But what about the chemical sunscreens that are rated a 8-10 for toxicity and known carcinogens?

This new research by the EWG reveals that the chemicals commonly used in sunscreen are endocrine disruptors, estrogenic and may interfere with thyroid and other hormone processes in the body. The most common sunscreen chemical, Oxybenzone, was found in 96% of the population by a recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This is alarming since oxybenzone is considered an endocrine disruptor, can reduce sperm count in men and may contribute to endometriosis in women. The EWG warns against using oxybenzone, especially on children or pregnant/breastfeeding women.

What brand is safe?

Here are 2 brands I recommend that are rated a ZERO from Think Dirty.
Badger and Think Baby. There are plenty others like Babyganics and California baby that are rated a 3, which is still in the green “safe zone.” Download the app. Scan your labels. Read the ingredients.

Yesterday I took my daughter for her 4 year well visit and preschool physical. I had a great experience. I saw Valerie at the Oak Brook office. She answered all of my questions and did a through physical. In addition, recommend some things to incorporate to better my daughters digestion.

I recently moved here from out of state and have been having a very hard time finding providers in the area for my kids. After a long search, I found Well Rooted and am so happy I did. Excellent providers who truly care, who listen to the parents and child and are very knowledgeable. It is worth the drive and the cost.

2nd opinion was more than what I expected. I not only was able to explain symptoms but also get educated on how to resolve the issue. So so worth the drive as we live 1 hour away. I highly recommend them and Victoria was a pleasure to get help from.

We don’t go to the Crystal Lake Well Rooted anymore since we moved going over to OakBrook. We saw Victoria was absolutely fantastic. She saw my son for the first 9 months of his life, and she not only provided phenomenal care for him, but also for myself as a newly postpartum mom. They are very respectful of your decisions as a parent at Well Rooted, and it’s nice to not feel like you’re being gaslit by medical professionals. I like how they have holistic remedies available for purchase as well. They also provided me references to lactation consultants, chiropractors, etc as well. My son is now almost 2 and thankfully very healthy. We love Well Rooted!
