Enjoy a Safe and Fun Summer Poolside: Tips for Minimizing Chlorine Exposure

‍♂️ As the sun shines bright and the temperatures rise, there’s nothing quite like cooling off with some poolside fun. Swimming is a fantastic way to keep kids active, happy, and entertained during the summer months. However, while chlorine is essential for keeping pools free of harmful bacteria, it can also have some harsh effects on our skin, hair, and overall health. But don’t worry, we have some fantastic tips to help you minimize chlorine exposure and keep your kids healthy and happy this summer.

The Harsh Effects of Chlorine

Chlorine is widely used in pools to kill bacteria and keep the water clean. However, it can cause several side effects, especially with prolonged exposure:

Skin Irritation and Dryness: Chlorine strips away the natural oils from our skin, leaving it dry, itchy, and more prone to irritation. For kids with sensitive skin, this can be particularly uncomfortable.
– Hair Damage: Chlorine can make hair dry and brittle, and it can even alter the color of dyed or highlighted hair, giving it a greenish tint.
– Eye Irritation: Red, itchy, or burning eyes after swimming in a chlorinated pool are common. This is especially true for children who wear contact lenses.
– Respiratory Issues: Inhaling chlorine fumes can lead to respiratory problems, such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. This is particularly concerning for children with asthma or other respiratory conditions.
– Disruption of the Microbiome: Chlorine doesn’t just kill harmful bacteria in the pool; it can also negatively affect the good bacteria on our skin and in our bodies, potentially leading to various health issues.

Combat Chlorine with Vitamin C Spray

One effective way to neutralize the harmful effects of chlorine on your skin and hair is by using a Vitamin C spray. Sodium ascorbate, a form of Vitamin C, reacts with chlorine, turning it into a less harmful compound that can be easily rinsed off. This means less irritation, dryness, and damage to your skin and hair.

 DIY Vitamin C Spray Recipe:

Ingredients:
– 1-2 cup(s) filtered water
– 1 tsp food-grade sodium ascorbate powder
– Glass spray bottle

Instructions:
1. Fill the glass spray bottle with filtered water.
2. Using a funnel, pour the sodium ascorbate powder into the bottle.
3. Close the bottle and shake well to ensure the solution is properly mixed.

How to Use:
Before and after swimming in a chlorinated pool, generously spray the Vitamin C solution onto your skin and hair. This will help neutralize the chlorine and reduce its harmful effects on the body. Be sure to shake well before spraying!

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Another excellent tool to mitigate the effects of chlorine is an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinse. ACV helps restore the skin’s pH balance and leaves hair feeling soft and clean.

DIY ACV Rinse:

Ingredients:
– 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
– Spray bottle filled with water

Instructions:
1. Add 1 tsp of ACV to the spray bottle filled with water.
2. Shake well to mix.

How to Use:
After swimming, spray the ACV solution onto your hair and body to help remove any excess chlorine. This natural remedy helps to restore the skin’s pH balance and soothe any irritation.

Supporting Overall Health

To further support your child’s health during pool season, consider these additional tips:
– Stay Hydrated: Encourage kids to drink water frequently to stay hydrated, especially during outdoor activities.
– Practice Sun Safety: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wear hats, and stay in the shade during peak sun hours.
– Shower Off: Showering before and after swimming can significantly reduce chlorine exposure.
– Regular Detox: Support your child’s detox pathways with a healthy diet, regular bowel movements, and plenty of outdoor play.

Swimming is one of the highlights of summer, and with these simple steps, you can ensure that your family enjoys all the benefits of pool time without the negative side effects of chlorine. Remember, the key is to be proactive and take a few extra steps to protect your skin, hair, and overall health. Now go have a splash!

Happy swimming!

Where do I begin????? I’m going to begin by telling you all a little back history about how I found this Diamond. I went through the wringer with my toddler since the day she was born. Doctors under the sun couldn’t give me anything but short answers, I paid so much money for better care and I was tossed around with questions and no answers. My baby was in need of somebody to just examine her properly and no matter how hard I looked it seemed impossible. that was in the past, until Jessica welcomed us with open arms, found the problem and continues to bless us with answers to our concerns by addressing them in a way that nobody ever has. We have seen major improvements in our daughter by following everything Jessica says, if you got to this page, I highly reccomend her. My daughter has seen so many doctors, been poked and pronged so many times that she doesn’t even like to be seen anymore. Trauma. But Jessica is patient, and kind. And she will find a way to get them to like her. My kid smiled for her and that was enough for me. And our kids have the same exact birthday, which felt like another sign to me!
Through our office visit, never once did I feel rushed or nervous. She never judged us for our choices as parents, and she always led us into a better path. Because of Jessica our daughter has a chance at a positive life with a promising future and I could not be more happy to have found her. This woman knows her stuff and she actually cares about people. I’ve never met someone in the medica field that I trust more than I trust her. I don’t know what I would do without her, I feel so grateful and I literally cried after our first visit when she gave us answers… and that’s how much I got out of her visit. Happy tears!!! Please don’t ever leave Jessica!!!Thank you Jessica.

We don’t go to the Crystal Lake Well Rooted anymore since we moved going over to OakBrook. We saw Victoria was absolutely fantastic. She saw my son for the first 9 months of his life, and she not only provided phenomenal care for him, but also for myself as a newly postpartum mom. They are very respectful of your decisions as a parent at Well Rooted, and it’s nice to not feel like you’re being gaslit by medical professionals. I like how they have holistic remedies available for purchase as well. They also provided me references to lactation consultants, chiropractors, etc as well. My son is now almost 2 and thankfully very healthy. We love Well Rooted!

Valerie is absolutely amazing!!! Our family feels so blessed to have been able to work with her. My son was diagnosed with Vitiligo, and with Valerie’s direction we have seen such a change in him. We were provided with so much information and finally have hope!
