ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment at Well-Rooted Pediatrics
Supporting Your Child’s Focus, Behavior, and Overall Well-Being

At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we understand that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to focus, complete tasks, and thrive academically and socially. ADHD is often characterized by symptoms such as inattention, impulsive behavior, difficulty sitting still, and challenges with school performance. However, the causes of ADHD can be complex and varied.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child’s ability to pay attention, control impulses, and regulate their behavior. It can manifest in different ways, from trouble concentrating to hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Symptoms often present at an early age and can continue into adolescence and adulthood. While ADHD is commonly diagnosed based on behavioral observations, there may be underlying causes or contributing factors that need to be addressed to optimize care and treatment.

Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD can vary widely among children but may include:

  • Inability to focus or pay attention to tasks
  • Difficulty sitting still or staying on task
  • Impulsive behavior or poor decision-making
  • Disorganization and trouble following through with instructions
  • Poor academic performance or inconsistent grades
  • Difficulty in social situations or maintaining relationships

How Well-Rooted Pediatrics Approaches ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment

At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we take a comprehensive and individualized approach to diagnosing and treating ADHD. We understand that there are many potential underlying factors contributing to ADHD-like symptoms, and we work diligently to identify these factors and offer a solution that addresses the root causes.

1. In-Depth Evaluation and History

The process begins with an in-depth evaluation, where we take the time to gather detailed information about your child’s symptoms, medical history, family history, and environmental factors. We also assess your child’s behavior, paying attention to how they respond in different settings (home, school, social environments). This holistic assessment allows us to uncover any external or internal factors influencing their symptoms.

2. Connor Questionnaire for ADHD Diagnosis

To further support the diagnosis, we use the Connor Questionnaire, which is a proven tool designed to assess the severity of ADHD symptoms in children. This questionnaire helps us identify whether the symptoms are indicative of ADHD and provides a basis for a more targeted treatment plan.

3. Advanced Testing for Underlying Triggers

When a more functional or holistic approach is desired, we may recommend advanced testing to investigate underlying triggers of ADHD. Potential contributing factors may include:

  • Nutritional deficiencies: Certain vitamin or mineral deficiencies can exacerbate ADHD symptoms.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Imbalances in thyroid or adrenal hormones can affect mood, focus, and behavior.
  • Environmental toxins: Exposure to toxins such as heavy metals or chemicals may contribute to ADHD symptoms.
  • Gut health issues: Imbalances in the gut microbiome can play a role in neurological and behavioral health.
  • Food sensitivities: Certain food allergies or intolerances may worsen behavioral symptoms.

4. Functional Medicine and Holistic Treatment Approach

At Well-Rooted Pediatrics, we believe that addressing the root causes of ADHD through a functional medicine approach provides long-term success and improvement. Rather than simply masking symptoms with medications, we use a holistic approach that combines nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and customized lab testing to help your child thrive.

Our approach may include:

  • Nutritional recommendations: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients to support brain health and reduce inflammation.
  • Supplements: Targeted supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, or zinc, which can help improve focus, reduce hyperactivity, and support overall well-being.
  • Lifestyle modifications: Guidance on improving sleep hygiene, stress management, and creating a supportive environment that nurtures focus and calmness.
  • Mind-body therapies: Techniques like mindfulness, behavioral therapy, or physical activity plans to improve concentration and emotional regulation.

5. Medication Options

In some cases, medications may be necessary to help manage ADHD symptoms. While we prefer to take a functional medicine approach first, we understand that some children may benefit from medications such as:

  • Stimulant medications: These are commonly prescribed to help improve focus and attention.
  • Non-stimulant medications: These may be used when stimulants are not effective or cause side effects.
  • Anti-depressants: Sometimes prescribed to address co-occurring mood disorders, which may contribute to ADHD-like symptoms.

Our goal is to use the least invasive treatment options while addressing the root causes of the condition and creating a comprehensive plan that helps your child succeed in all areas of life.

As an overwhelmed expecting mother, I was becoming extremely defeated as I interviewed pediatricians to help me care for my son when he arrived. As a nurse, I was searching for someone collaborative, respectful, patient, and would be able to provide insight and guidance with more depth than what I could quickly access on a Google search. Jessica and the staff of Well Rooted is a God-send, exceeding my expectations every visit! Jessica is extremely present during very visits, despite whatever is happening outside the exam room door. She is incredibly kind, gentle, patient and with excellent clinical skills and judgement! She has also been immediately available to me via phone on the weekend, when I have had a concern. I just love her and the entire staff at Well Rooted so much and I couldn’t recommend them enough!

This place has been a blessing to my family. We come from Aurora and don’t mind the drive. The whole staff and the DR are very knowledgeable and helpful. This is our first baby and in great hands.

We love this office! Jessica was the first practitioner to tell me about sublingual therapy allergy drops for environmental allergies. I had 3 out of 4 of my kids suffer from extreme eczema. Daily itching, bleeding, open wounds. Other doctors and allergist just told me to keep putting lotion on because it was due to dry skin. Believe me when I say I lathered my kids multiple times a day and tried every natural product out there and it didn’t help! Steroid cream was the only thing that was able to calm it down but it would come right back once we stopped using it. Well, a year into the allergy drops and my kids have beautiful eczema free skin! No more tears, no more fear of swimming pools and fear of infections. All thanks to the wonderful providers at Well-Rooted Pediatrics!! They truly care and think outside the box to get to the root of the problem. I am forever grateful for them!

Doctors and medical offices have always given me fear. Not with this place! Some of the nicest most catering people I have ever met with truly good intentions! We love this place! The kids love the atmosphere with Great Wall art to look at. We feel like family here! They take the time to explain things and do not rush us out the door. Thank you all for all the love you share with our family!
